René Mahieu is a doctoral researcher at the Research Group on Law Science, Technology and Society of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), with Paul de Hert as promotor, under supervision of Joris van Hoboken of VUB and co-supervision of Hadi Asghari of Delft University of Technology. The main research question of his thesis is: How and to what extent does the exercise of the right of access to personal data meet its objectives in practice? The work has a particular focus on the collective practices that exist around the right. In this research he combines methods of legal scholarship and political-philosophy with empirical approaches. As part of his research, he is coordinating an expert group in relation to access rights that includes different leading stakeholders working on data rights, including NGOs, journalists, academics and technology experts.
