noyb is a non-profit organisation working to enforce data protection laws, in particular the GDPR. So far noyb has filed more than 800 complaints for wilful privacy violation against companies like Meta, Google and Amazon.

Gradually the EU Collective Redress Directive gets into operation and allows ‘Class Actions’ for GDPR violations. Courts also gradually confirm that GDPR violations can create relevant non-material damages. However, so far there was not an instant boom in such litigation. The panel is meant to look at the reality after the laws (largely) being implemented and highlighting practical and legal obstacles.

Max Schrems

Max Schrems is an Austrian lawyer, author and data protection activist. In November 2017, he founded the data protection NGO NOYB - European Centre for Digital Rights. Together with the Sustainable Computing Lab at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, NOYB started ADPC (Advanced Data Protection Control). ADPC is a technical specification that describes how signals for automated communication of users data protection decisions can be sent from the terminal of a user (usually the browser) to a website. It aims to demonstrate that a more reasonable approach to communicate privacy preferences than typical “cookie banners” is possible.

Sean O'Sullivan

Barrister - Ireland

A member of the Irish Bar and the Bar of England and Wales, Sean’s practice is concentrated on Corporate Insolvency & Restructuring, Banking & Financial Services and Commercial & Contract Disputes. He has a particular focus on Regulatory and Data Protection Law, where he has represented cases at all levels of the Irish Superior Courts and in the Court of Justice of the European Union. Sean acts regularly on behalf of individuals and corporate entities, including banks, and on behalf of receivers, examiners and liquidators. Sean also helps clients resolve disputes through arbitration, mediation and negotiation, and has also represented clients at statutory Commissions of Investigation. Sean is a regular lecturer and speaker on all topics relating to his practice, in particular in relation to corporate insolvency and restructuring.

Ianika Tzankova

Tilburg University / Rubicon Impact&Litigation - Netherlands

Ianika is the Head of Global Dispute Resolution & Collective Redress. She is a pioneer in collective redress and has held the first European professorship in this field since 2007. She combines academia with practice and is internationally recognised for her knowledge of strategies for resolving cross-border mass disputes, using innovative litigation and alternative dispute resolution approaches. Having assisted corporate clients, collective redress litigants, litigation funders, governmental and non-profit organisations, ‘bookbuild’ entities, case originators, and Dutch and foreign legal counsel on all aspects of mass claim dispute resolution, Ianika is a ‘mass claims all-rounder’. She is much sought after for legal opinions and the structuring and implementation of creative litigation strategies in multi-jurisdictional disputes, particularly in the areas of investor protection, competition, data privacy, product liability and consumer law. Ianika is alumna of Tilburg University and holds a PhD on Access to Justice in Mass Claims.

Charles Demoulin

Deminor - Belgium

Charles is the Chief Investment Officer (“CIO”) of Deminor and the executive director in charge of the Private Antitrust Litigation department. Charles joined Deminor in 1999 and became partner in 2008. As CIO, he chairs the Investment Committee taking decisions on funding opportunities and monitors the case assessment review process. Charles is a director of the recently incorporated European Litigation Funders Association (ELFA), the not-for-profit association that represents the interests of Europe-based litigation funders.
