Elizabeth Denham CBE was appointed UK Information Commissioner in July 2016, having previously held the position of Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, Canada and Assistant Privacy Commissioner of Canada. The Information Commissioner has responsibility for promoting and enforcing the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA), the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), and other information rights related legislation. She is independent from government and upholds information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals.
