Short BIO
I have 25 years of experience in IT, and for the last year have been an independent consultant specialising in digital identity, privacy and public policy. My history includes work on retail and investment banking systems; distributed applications; cryptography and key management; IT security; and identity management. My focus over the last few years has been on the “privacy ecosystem”: finding the balance of technology, regulation, governance and culture which is most likely to result in better privacy outcomes.
Some people say that Web 2.0 “changes the nature of privacy”; I agree, but I don't think we just have to lie back and accept that – I think we can influence where digital privacy goes, if we only make the effort to understand it better.
Title of the presentation
Is “social networking” a contradiction in terms?
Abstract
Although online services appear to offer “social networking”, I would argue that what they really offer is “networked interaction” which does not operate by the same rules as “social interaction”. If we assume (and behave as if) they are equivalent, we are conspiring to delude ourselves.
