CPDP Conference 2011
Hosting the panel on “Behavioural targeting & profiling”
Behavioural advertising is a rapidly growing industry which represents both a growing threat to our privacy and a major source of revenues for service providers, which allows us to benefit from “free” online services. As many privacy issues, behavioral targeting is quite a complex area raising questions about the effectiveness of self-regulation, the need to adapt privacy laws to encompass the notion of profile, the risks of unfair discriminations, the potential role of technologies to limit privacy threats, openness, public awareness, etc.
The issues at stake are major, both in collective and individual terms, and the data collection that is at the core of the online marketing business model should no grow without proper reflection and debate. The objective of this panel is to review the different issues raised by behavioral targeting following a multidisciplinary approach with contrasting views from privacy advocates as well as lawyers and computer scientists.
