Sophie in’t Veld was born in 1963 in Vollenhove in the Netherlands and is a member of Democraten 66 (the social liberal party in the Netherlands). She is a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), in the European Parliament.
In 1991 Sophie in 't Veld graduated with a higher degree in History at the State University of Leiden. In 1993 she finished her post-doctoral training in management and public administration. From 1991 to 1993 Sophie in 't Veld worked as a translator.
Between 1993 and 1994 she worked as a trainee policy advisor for the Gouda Council (in the Netherlands). In 1994 she became an assistant to a member of the European Parliament before being nominated, in 1996, Secretary-General of the ELDR Group, Committee of the Regions. She was also a member of the executive committee of the Delft section of D66 and Chairwoman of the Belgian section of D66.
In 2004 Sophie in 't Veld was elected a Member of the European Parliament. She is a member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and substitute member of the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee and of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality.
Sophie in 't Veld is chair and founder of the Working Group on Separation of Religion and Politics and co-chair of the European Parliament Intergroup for Gay and Lesbian Rights.
