Title of the presentation

Privacy Protection in ITS: a holistic approach is needed

Abstract

The contribution describes some of the various aspects a car manufacturer has to take into account regarding data protection and privacy. These range from different customer expectations depending on the customer’s age and nationality, different legislations in different countries to the various possibilities to uniquely identify a car, it’s owner and it’s users. For example, besides the identifiers and data related to in-car applications, there are license plates, VINs (Vehicle Identification Number) on the windscreen, wireless sensors in tires, toll collect systems and network addresses of the car’s wireless communication systems. Most of these are handled differently by different organizations and not all can be protected by the appropriate PETs (Privacy Enhancing Technology). With future smart vehicles and Web 2.0 on every mobile phone, the situation will not improve.
